Fastned has opened two ultra-rapid charging stations in the North East, located near Newcastle Airport and in Sunderland.
Marking the next step in its nationwide growth plans, the airport site is situated at Callerton Parkway Metro station, just one Metro stop from Newcastle Airport. It offers 12 drive-through bays under a full canopy, making it easy for drivers to pull in, charge, and get back on the road.
The Sunderland hub is located at North Moor Road and features an initial six charging bays and Fastned’s standout yellow ‘wings’, along with brand-new Costa Coffee and Greggs outlets.
Fastned now operates 13 sites across the North East, reinforcing its work in accelerating the region’s electric vehicle adoption.
The network has already supported more than 273,000 charging sessions since Fastned opened the UK’s first ultra-rapid hub at West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019.
Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, said: “We are leading the way in installing new charge points across the region, and welcome this latest addition, as the North East becomes the home of the green energy revolution.”

Fastned’s charging facilities are highly rated by drivers, as shown by the latest Zapmap survey, where the company achieved top scores for ease of use and payment options.
The ultra-rapid charging hubs are designed to be easy, safe and comfortable for everyone. Extra-wide bays make parking and manoeuvring user-friendly, including for drivers using wheelchairs or mobility aids, while suspended cable systems take ‘the heavy lifting’ out of ultra-rapid charging. The sites are designed with bright, open layouts using clear sightlines, high-quality lighting, CCTV coverage and some sites include a toilet. Multilingual support is available 24/7.
