Good Energy’s new time-of-use tariff to cut charging costs for EV drivers

By / 3 years ago / UK News / No Comments

A new smart tariff that will reduce the cost of charging is launching from 100% renewable energy supplier Good Energy.

The tariff offers customers two overnight off-peak periods to charge their EV at a cheaper rate and will be enabled by smart meters

Dubbed Green Driver, the tariff offers customers two overnight off-peak periods to charge their EV at a cheaper rate and will be enabled by smart meters.

The two options provide a five- or seven-hour window for optimal charging, starting at midnight.

The tariff was designed based on feedback following an extensive trial of 100 participants over a three-month period earlier this year.

The trial found that 98% of customers used their off-peak periods to charge their EVs –surpassing expectations, as drivers took advantage of the lower cost of electricity.

Customers also took the opportunity to use the dishwasher and washing machine during the off-peak period.

Currently, in the UK, peak times for using electricity are between 4pm and 8pm. But using a a smart charging tariff could reduce the peaks and help National Grid balance supply and demand.

The tariff will also be backed by genuinely green energy sourced from Good Energy’s community of 1,600 independent renewable generators, and will be Good Energy’s cheapest electric vehicle tariff to date.

Nigel Pocklington, Good Energy’s CEO, said: “This green EV tariff is smart, good value, and works around people’s hectic schedules. Many new electric vehicle drivers want to charge at home but are afraid it will cost them the earth. Our new EV tariff does the opposite by offering people cheaper rates backed by genuinely green power.

“We need to simplify the experience of EV charging and show people it’s both the right thing to do and easy as pie.”
