Lotus has set a new record for the fastest-charging electric vehicle after hitting peak charging power of 443kW.

The record was completed by Lotus Al Ghanim, the official Lotus dealer in Kuwait, using one of the performance carmaker’s ultra-fast 450kW DC chargers, unveiled at the start of the year.

The Emeya, the first electric hyper-GT from Lotus, was able to maximise nearly the full capacity of the charger, packing in 443kW and enabling it to charge from 10 to 80% in 13 minutes 35 seconds.

Previously, the fastest charging speed recorded on a Lotus Emeya stood at 402kW.

The ultra-fast charging record was achieved despite the extensive heat conditions in the region, which Lotus said highlighted the durability, reliability and efficiency of both the car and the charger itself, which is designed for charge point operators, fleet providers and dealerships.

Lotus has begun rolling out its ultra-fast 450kW DC charger in Europe, starting in Germany, and followed by other European markets in the near future.

Currently, the fastest public EV chargers in the UK are believed to be the 480kW devices installed in Blackpool by Park Garage Group and Helix Renewables.

BYD has said it will bring its megawatt flash-charging technology to the UK from around 2026, able to add up to 249 miles of range in just five minutes and available to all compatible EVs.
