New research has exposed a major 23-fold difference in reliability between Britain’s best- and worst-performing used electric vehicles.

The Renault Zoe emerged as Britain’s most dependable used EV

The inaugural EV Market View Report by the Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) analysed roughly 2,500 real-world EV warranty claims to bust major misconceptions about electric vehicle ownership.

The data highlights a massive disparity in how individual EV models perform once they exit their manufacturer warranty periods. The Renault Zoe emerged as Britain’s most dependable used EV, boasting an incredibly low claim rate of just 1.49%. This was followed by the BMW i3 (2.17%), MG ZS EV (2.33%), Nissan Leaf (2.42%) and Tesla Model Y (3.33%). Together, the findings demonstrate that dependable used EV ownership is now being achieved across a diverse mix of manufacturers, vehicle types and price points.

Conversely, luxury models sit at the opposite end of the spectrum, led by the Tesla Model S, which recorded the highest warranty claim rate at 34.78%, followed by the Mercedes-Benz EQV (33.33%) and Tesla Model X (29.17%). The contrast was striking. The Tesla Model S generated warranty claims at a rate more than 23 times higher than the Renault Zoe.

The report reveals there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ used EV. Instead, significant differences exist between individual models, with some delivering exceptionally dependable ownership while others generate warranty claims far more frequently.

Dennis Brett, claims director at Warranty Solutions Group, said: “One of the key messages from our research is that the industry should look beyond headline figures such as battery range or purchase price. Understanding how individual models perform in the real world, the types of repairs they are likely to require, and the potential cost of those repairs provides a much clearer picture of long-term ownership and vehicle risk.

“Electric vehicles have matured enormously over the past decade and many are proving exceptionally reliable. However, our data also shows that reliability can vary significantly between individual models.”

Faults dominated by electronics not batteries

The report also challenges one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding used EV ownership. Despite continued concern over battery degradation, high-voltage battery repairs accounted for just 2.14% of warranty claims. Instead, charging systems, vehicle electronics and traditional wear and tear components are increasingly driving warranty activity as electric vehicles age and move beyond their original manufacturer warranties.

Central locking systems are now the most common fault, while charger port repairs average almost £1,900.

The findings align with research revealed earlier this week by Warrantywise that laid bare the top five most common electric vehicle faults, showing that high-voltage battery failures are completely absent from the main liabilities.

Low-frequency, high-severity faults uncovered

While many of the most common EV faults are relatively inexpensive to repair, WSG’s analysis also identified a number of high-value claims involving premium electric vehicles, highlighting the increasing complexity of modern EV technology and the importance of effective warranty protection as vehicles move into the used market.

The largest warranty claim paid during the study reached £4,801.24 following extensive battery system repairs to a Jaguar I-Pace. Other significant claims included £3,127.09 for a coolant heater repair on a Jaguar I-Pace, £3,102.36 for an electric motor repair on a Mercedes EQA and £3,051.59 for repairs to a Porsche Taycan involving the on-board charger, door lock and vehicle diagnostics.

The data also demonstrates that high repair costs are not limited to battery-related faults. A Tesla Model 3 required repairs totalling £3,000 to its air conditioning compressor, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and parking distance control (PDC) sensor.

Furthermore, while charger port repairs represented only 2.14% of overall claims, they generated an eye-watering average repair bill of £1,881.66 – with some individual Porsche Taycan charger port repairs spiking to £2,995.85 and £2,054.60 – making it one of the most expensive recurring faults identified in the study.

The findings suggest that, as electric vehicles mature, many ownership issues increasingly resemble those experienced by petrol and diesel vehicles. Electronics, sensors, charging hardware and suspension components are now featuring more prominently within warranty claims data as EVs age and mileages increase.

The rising cost of specialist expertise

The research also highlights how the economics of EV ownership are changing and the cost of repairing electric vehicles is evolving as they become more mainstream.

WSG found the average labour rate across all EV claims reached £92.04 per hour, with repairs requiring an average of 2.07 labour hours. Labour now accounts for almost 30% of the average repair bill, reflecting the specialist diagnostics, software systems and high-voltage expertise increasingly required to repair modern electric vehicles.

Although EVs generally require less routine servicing than petrol or diesel vehicles, repairs increasingly involve sophisticated electronics, advanced driver assistance systems and complex software diagnostics. As a result, labour is becoming an increasingly significant contributor to overall ownership costs.

The report is designed to help fleets, drivers and the automotive industry better understand the opportunities and challenges emerging as increasing numbers of electric vehicles move beyond manufacturer warranties and into the used vehicle market.

As the used EV market continues to mature, combining real-world claims data with industry insight gives retailers a clearer understanding of where the market is heading and helps build confidence in used electric vehicles across the sector.”
