The new BYD Dolphin G plug-in hybrid supermini has launched in the UK with prices starting at £23,990 and first deliveries scheduled for September 2026.
Joining the existing fully electric model, the new compact hatchback arrives as the smallest plug-in hybrid on the UK market.
Powered by BYD’s DM technology in two different variations, it offers up to 65 miles of electric-only range and a 201.7mpg weighted fuel consumption.
The powertrain is shared with the new Atto 2 DM-i compact crossover and teams up a 95hp 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 163hp front-mounted electric motor and a generator, giving a total of 176hp of power for entry-level versions and 212hp for higher grades. It’s good for a 112mph top speed and 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds.
The Dolphin G is available in four trim levels: Active, Boost, Comfort and Sport.
Every model comes with LED headlights, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and rain-sensing wipers as standard. Onboard technology delivers automatic air conditioning, 8.8-inch driver display, satellite navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety side, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and front and rear parking sensors are all included as standard across the line-up.
The Active starts from £23,990 and features a 7.4kWh Blade Battery which can be topped up with 3.3kW charging. This entry-level model offers 24.8 miles of electric-only range, a combined range of 633 miles and a weighted fuel consumption of 108.6mpg. Exterior features include 16-inch alloy wheels, while other standard equipment brings fabric interior upholstery, a four-speaker audio system, a 10.1-inch touchscreen and a rear-view camera.
The Boost version costs £26,990 and benefits from a step up in powertrain spec, introducing the larger 18.3kWh battery, which lifts the electric-only range to 65 miles and the total driving range to 646 miles, while the weighted fuel consumption improves to 201.7mpg. Power also increases, taking the total output from 176hp to 212hp. AC charging increases from 3.3kW to 6.6kW, while DC charging is also introduced, offering speeds of up to 39kW for faster charges during longer journeys.
Boost variants also add exterior mirrors with an electrically folding function, privacy glass, a vegan leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, heated front seats and additional air vents plus two 18W USB-C ports for rear seat occupants. Onboard technology delivers a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker audio system, multi-colour ambient lighting and 15W wireless and cooled smartphone charging.
The Comfort, priced from £28,490, is set apart from the Boost with 18-inch alloy wheels and exterior mirror footlights. The seats feature fabric and vegan leather upholstery, and the driver’s seat gains electrical adjustment. In-car technology benefits from Google built-in added to the infotainment system; introducing Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to the Play Store, opening up the availability of extra apps. A full 360-degree camera also features, making low-speed manoeuvres even simpler.
The range is headed by the Sport trim, which is priced from £29,490. Externally, the Sport can be distinguished from the rest of the range by its black 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the seats are trimmed in artificial suede, offered in black with either orange or blue accents. The accents are matched to the Sport’s two exterior colour options: Sunset Orange and Ocean Blue.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Dolphin G also comes with class-leading boot space of 425 litres, which can be expanded to 1,225 litres by folding down the 60/40 split rear seats, while the boot sides feature practical fixed hooks.
The Dolphin G is available to order from UK dealers now, with first customer deliveries due in September.
