The Nissan Leaf topped the reliability rankings for EVs

The data, published by Warranty Solutions Group and based on real-world warranty claims, highlights significant differences in both fault rates and repair costs across popular models – offering valuable insights for drivers, fleets and dealers.

The Nissan Leaf topped the reliability rankings with a low claim rate of 3.06%, reinforcing its reputation for robust engineering and dependable performance. Its simplicity of design, proven electric drivetrain and strong track record for durability have all contributed to its standout reliability.

The MG ZS EV came in second, posting a claim rate of 4.76%. As one of the most affordable electric SUVs on the market, the ZS not only performs well in terms of reliability but also boasts the lowest average repair cost in the study at £225.90. This combination of low fault rates and minimal repair bills cements the ZS as a smart, budget-friendly option for families and first-time EV owners.

Claiming third place is the Audi e-tron – the predecessor to the Q8 e-tron – with a warranty claim rate of 5.56%. Despite its premium positioning, the e-tron’s reliability figures are competitive, and its average repair cost remains below £310. Audi’s focus on build quality and advanced technology ensures that the e-tron delivers both luxury and durability, making it a strong contender for drivers seeking a high-end yet dependable EV experience.

However, the data also includes some unexpected results. The Vauxhall Corsa Electric, despite a middling claim rate of 9.68%, recorded the highest average claim cost at a surprising £2,261.88 under the Warranty Solutions Group data, which the firm said suggested parts scarcity or complex repairs may be to blame.

At the top of the unreliability table sits the Tesla Model S, with a 50% warranty claim rate and an average claim cost of £703.50. It’s followed by the former Volkswagen e-Golf (33.33%) and the erstwhile Kia E-Niro (25%), which also show higher-than-average claim rates according to Warranty Solutions Group, although their repair costs are more modest. The discontinued Jaguar I-Pace meanwhile has a claim rate of 21.43% and one of the highest average repair costs at £1,353.69.

Meanwhile, premium models such as the Porsche Taycan (£1,750.16) and Tesla Model 3 (£470.89) also reflect the financial risk that comes with high-end EV tech, despite slightly lower fault rates.

EVs versus claims rates and repairs

Warranty Solutions Group also posed the question of EV claims versus internal combustion engine (ICE) and found EV and ICE vehicles have similar claim rates, with EVs at 13.21% and ICE vehicles slightly higher at 13.74%. However, when it comes to repair costs, EVs are significantly more expensive to fix, with an average claim value of £858.50 compared to £668.45 for ICE vehicles.

This gap reflects the higher cost of specialist EV components and the complexity of repairs, even though EVs generally have fewer moving parts. For drivers and dealers, this reinforces the importance of factoring in potential repair bills when making decisions about EV ownership and warranty coverage.

Most common EV faults

When it comes to the most common EV faults, charger ports are the most frequent cause of warranty claims, with a claim rate of 3.01%, although repairs are relatively affordable at an average of £119.96.  Other recurring faults include issues with the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), on-board chargers, air conditioning compressors and 12V batteries.

However, while the TPMS and battery repairs remain moderate at £132.67 and £193.80 respectively, on-board charger and air conditioning compressor faults are significantly more costly to rectify, averaging over £1,000 per repair. These insights highlight the importance of maintaining EV-specific components and the potential hidden costs drivers might face even for seemingly minor faults.
