A micro logistics hub using e-cargo bikes and electric vans for greener deliveries has opened in Portsmouth.

Solent Transport, in collaboration with Decarbon Logistics Solutions, has appointed Delivery Mates to run the new hub, which will be located in Hilsea Industrial Estate and is the first of its kind in the Solent area.

Delivered by the Solent Future Transport Zone (FTZ) programme and funded by the Department for Transport, the hub is part of a 12-month trial to understand how micro logistics hubs can play a role in reducing congestion, improving air quality and streamlining urban logistics across the city.

Delivery Mates will operate the hub, receiving and sorting up to 1,000 parcels a day from national couriers and local businesses. The parcels will initially be delivered by vans and lorries, where they will be transferred onto electric cargo cycles or electric vans to be couriered to their final destination.

The trial will allow data analysis of the impact of sustainable last-mile logistics methods in the longer term and will be designed with the possibility for continuation on a commercial basis beyond the end of the trial period.

The site will serve as a model for future hubs across the Solent area, delivering cleaner, greener transport whilst offering businesses an efficient and eco-friendly logistics solution.
