Savings from EV switch highlighted in new government campaign

A new campaign that spotlights the savings and benefits of going electric has launched from the Government.

The campaign spotlights the benefits of going electric for private drivers

Dubbed ‘Get that electric feeling’, the initiative runs across TV, radio and digital outlets, showcasing how drivers can save up to £3,750 off the cost of a new EV thanks to the government Electric Car Grant.

The campaign also shows that EV drivers can save up to £1,400 on annual fuel and maintenance costs and highlights the UK’s growing 87,000-strong charging network. The Government is also rolling out an additional 100,000 new local public chargers over the coming years, supported by the £381m Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund for local authorities. Ministers are also providing reforms to planning rules so residents without private driveways can install home chargers more easily and cheaply, and is launching a £25m fund for local authorities to install cross-pavement channels in England.

Keir Mather, Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, said: “Over 50,000 drivers have made savings of up to £3,750 off a new EV and £1,400 a year on running costs. Our campaign is here to show millions of Brits the benefits of making the switch, which could save their family budget thousands.

“With over 87,000 public chargers across the UK and thousands more on the way, our message is clear – going electric has never been easier and under this government, you can save thousands when you do.

“The evidence is clear: once drivers go electric, they don’t go back. The campaign taps into that reality with testimonials from real EV owners, explaining how the switch has transformed everyday driving for them – from the driveway to the high street.”

The Climate Group said the initiative would help more drivers go electric as it warned that myths and misinformation are holding the nation back from taking the next leap following widespread fleet electrification.

Dominic Phinn, head of transport at Climate Group, said: “Major UK businesses, such as members of our EV100 network, have been leading on fleet electrification, but are warning that a much bigger perception shift in the population is now needed for them to keep driving the transition.

“The Government’s new EV marketing campaign is a very welcome step towards galvanising the public around smarter, cheaper and cleaner road transport that benefits all.”

Colin Walker, head of transport at the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), also welcomed the government action to take EV misinformation.

“EV sales in the UK are booming, up 24% in 2025 and accounting for almost one in four new cars sold. Yet, while millions of families have made the move to EVs, many more are being held back from making the switch by persistent misinformation about EVs and the EV transition – keeping people in dirtier and more expensive petrol cars for longer.

“The scale of this misinformation has been flagged as a major issue by the House of Lords, and is why this new government campaign is necessary. With our own analysis showing that second-hand EVs can save drivers £1,450 a year the moment they get their hands on the keys, improving people’s understanding of the realities of EV ownership will give more drivers the confidence to make the move. In reality the UK is a frontrunner when it comes to making the shift to the electric cars of the future. There are now over 1.8 million EVs on the UK’s roads, increasingly powered by electrons generated by British wind and solar farms. And more and more EVs are beginning to roll off British production lines –from the electric Mini in Oxford, to the Nissan Leaf in Sunderland, and the new electric Jags set to emerge in the West Midlands.”

EVA England, a member association championing EV drivers, said campaigns such as the new Department for Transport initiative play an important role in building confidence, but more must be done to make switching realistic for everyone.

Vicky Edmonds, CEO of EVA England, commented: “Public charging must be affordable for drivers who rely on it, and stronger support to help lower income households access both the new and used EV market will let more people enjoy the benefits of electric vehicles without the barrier of high upfront costs. Taking these steps is essential to making the EV transition work for all drivers.”
